Cheney Leads Tight Title Heading into Winton

The TA2 Muscle Car Series has reached the pointy end of the season with the penultimate round of the championship this weekend at Winton Motor Raceway, September 26-27, with the top seven drivers all in a position to challenge for the title at the end of the year.

Waltec driver Tyler Cheney currently leads the championship in his Cross Country Touring Camaro by a slender 42 points from Alice Buckley in the #150 Chevrolet Performance Camaro. Despite suffering a heavy crash two weeks ago at The Bend Motorsport Park in the Trans Am Cup Series, he says he's not feeling any ill effects and is ready to consolidate his lead this weekend.

"The crash at Tailem was unfortunate and has really hurt my Trans Am Series aspirations, but my TA2 car is mint, and although 42 points seems like a lot, it will only take one bad race or DNF for the field to close up."

"Alice has already proven she's a race winner and a title threat, let alone Gomersall and Heinrich, so I just need to have a consistent weekend and make sure I'm still in the mix at the final round," said Cheney.

Third in the championship is Ben Gomersall, who arrives at Winton off the back of his first Supercars enduro outing, having lined up with Tickford Racing at The Bend, while South Australian driver Joel Heinrich, currently fourth in the championship, will line up at Winton for the first time in a TA2 car this weekend, following a tough round in the Trans Am Cup Series at The Bend.

Both Tommy Smith and Brock Paine return to the TA2 field after dipping their toes in the water at the Trans Am Cup Series at QR and The Bend, an experience which saw Paine achieve an unbelievable result of 2nd outright at the Queensland Raceway round in one of the oldest cars in the country.

Walkinshaw TWG Racing Jnr driver Ayce Buckley will swap his Toyota GR Cup car for a TA2 seat, making his TA2 debut this weekend in a Garage 21-prepped Ford Mustang.

Local Albury driver Jackson Rice returns to action this weekend, keen to impress on his home track where he's enjoyed strong results in the past.

The Circo Master Class will be hotly contested by Robbie Farr, Chris Smerdon and Clinton Rayner, with Domain Ramsay making a welcome return in the #71 Camaro.

Weekend activities begin Saturday with a 40-minute practice session, followed by qualifying and two races. Sunday begins with an early morning warm-up, a further qualifying session, and two more races to close out the event.
